How to Get Sober

On Expert Advice

There gets to be a point in the life of many alcoholics where they realize they have a problem but have no idea how to get sober. As any recovering addict will tell you, sobriety is not easy. But it’s definitely worth it. Ultimately, the path to sobriety differs from person-to-person.

There is no silver bullet to getting sober.  We may sound like a broken record, but in our experience, there are too many variables to give a definitive answer to “How to get sober.” But we can examine why getting sober is so difficult, how Prominence Treatment Center approaches treating alcoholism and what your next steps should be.

Why Is Sobriety So Hard?

Alcoholics Like Drinking

Sobriety is hard quite simply because drinking is so enjoyable for alcoholics. The taste of a fine craft beer, the deep flavor of tannin filled Cabernet Sauvignon, or the bite of aged liquor. These sensations can fuel an alcoholic’s desire for alcohol.

It`s Time to Recover and Start Your New Chapter

In addition to an alcoholic’s taste for alcohol, many social settings encourage drinking, making it seem acceptable. You might go out to dinner with friends or meet your co-workers out after work. It might even seem odd if someone weren’t to drink in these scenarios. Wherever you turn, an acceptable reason to drink will always be there, giving alcoholics an excuse to indulge.

Drinking becomes routine. Just like brushing your teeth in the morning, or washing your face at night, drinking can become an everyday part of your life. Not doing it might even give you that weird, “I forgot to do something” feeling like when you forget to put on deodorant.  When an individual hits this stage, it’s a good idea to start looking for help.

How Does Prominence Treatment Center Treat Alcoholism?

Prominence Treatment Center is known for our Non 12-Step approach to alcohol addiction. We use this method of addiction treatment because our experience indicates that the best way to treat addiction is on an individual, custom basis.  Unlike 12-Step treatment programs, that just pushes you through its process.

The 12-Step process is like a car assembly line.  It’s efficient to send a car down the assembly line, adding parts where they’re needed, in the same exact manner each time. And with a car, you know exactly what you’re going to get at the end. This is exactly what happens with a 12-Step program. There is a predetermined set of steps, and you’re expected to go through each step in order until you reach the end and are no longer an alcoholic. Except that’s not how it works.

Start Feeling Better Now

What if the car assembly line is meant for SUVs? But then the first car frame is actually for a truck, or compact car? Then what? Everything else is thrown off and doesn’t work because the assembly line is trying to force its same process on a car frame that’s not meant for this process. Do you see why a 12-Step program is not effective for overcoming alcoholism?

What You Can Do To Get Sober

Find someone to talk to

Admit you have a problem. That’s always the first step. If you don’t think you have an alcohol problem, you’re not ready for any kind of treatment. Loved ones will try and force you to find help, but more often than not, it’s not going to be effective. Alcohol addiction starts with you.

Once you have decided to get help, reach out and talk to someone. You could talk to a friend, family member or trusted professional. Whoever it may be, recovery isn’t done alone. Talk to someone about your options.  Professionals at Prominence Treatment Center are trained to help addicts figure out the best course of action to recover from their drinking.

Whether you choose the 12-Step process or the Non 12-Step process, there are options available to you. If you want to get sober, there is a treatment program for you. Call Prominence Treatment Center today if you think the Non 12-Step treatment program might be right for you.
