Percocet is a narcotic pain reliever used to provide moderate, short term pain relief. It contains a combination of Oxycodone (opiod) and Acetaminophen, the drug commonly found in Tylenol, or other over-the counter pain relievers. The positive effects of Percocet are pain relief, sedation (sleepiness), euphoria and anxiety reduction.
If abused or taken long-term, Percocet is extremely mentally and physically addictive. Side effects include dizziness, shallow breathing, confusion, nausea, lack of appetite and hallucinations. Breaking this addiction is extremely difficult because of severe withdrawal symptoms.
Vicodin is a prescription drug used to relieve moderate to severe pain, often after surgical procedures. Like Percocet, Vicoden contains Acetaminophen.
Vicodin addiction has escalated in recent years and is now one of the most abused prescription drugs, affecting millions of people annually.
The effects of Vicodin use that increase the tendency for recreational use are euphoria, drowsiness and slowing of the pulse. Side effects include upset stomach, nausea, anxiousness, convulsions, loss of appetite and seizures. Vicodin has a depressant effect on the central nervous system, which can cause irritability, and difficulty breathing.
Common withdrawal symptoms from Percocet or Vicodin include fever, body aches, anxiety, sweating, nausea/vomiting and stomach pain. These symptoms can be very severe and can last weeks without appropriate treatment.
Common signs of prescription drug abuse or dependency:
- Individuals take a larger dosage than prescribed
- Individuals use multiple doctors to obtain multiple prescriptions
- Individuals require a higher dose of drug to achieve same effect over time
- Individuals experience withdrawal symptoms including insomnia, muscle aches, and/or night sweats when they stop using the drug
